Overview:

The Province of Saskatchewan in Canada is located to the west of Manitoba and Ontario, and to the north of the states of Montana and North Dakota in the U.S. ₁ Statistics Canada estimated that the 2003 population of the province was 994,800 persons. ₂ During 2004-SEP, Saskatchewan became the seventh political jurisdiction in Canada in which a lawsuit was successfully initiated to expand marriage to include same-sex couples.

The lawsuit was successful, as all of the six previous ones have been. SSM was legalized by court order in the province as of 2004-NOV-05.

In 2005-JUL, a federal law was passed that made SSM available in every territory and province, except for Prince Edward Island (PEI). Faced with a lawsuit, PEI conformed with the law, making SSM available Canada-wide.

A marriage commissioner refused to marry a same-sex couple in 2005. He was convicted of violating the province's Human Rights Code, and fined. In 2008-DEC, he sued the Saskatchewan Government.
