The Province of Saskatchewan in Canada is located to the west of
Manitoba and Ontario, and to the north of the states of Montana and North
Dakota in the U.S. 1Statistics Canada estimated that
the 2003 population of the province was 994,800 persons. 2 During 2004-SEP, Saskatchewan became the seventh political jurisdiction in
Canada in which a lawsuit was successfully initiated to expand marriage to include same-sex
couples.
The lawsuit was successful, as all of the six previous ones have been.
SSM was legalized by court order in the province as of 2004-NOV-05.
In 2005-JUL,
a federal law was passed that made SSM available in every territory and
province, except for Prince Edward Island (PEI). Faced with a lawsuit, PEI
conformed with the law, making SSM available Canada-wide.
A marriage commissioner refused to marry a same-sex couple in 2005. He was
convicted of violating the province's Human Rights Code, and fined. In 2008-DEC, he
sued the Saskatchewan Government.
