Oregon's Death With Dignity law went into effect during 1997. It allows some terminally-ill patients to request assistance to commit suicide. This triggered plebiscites and legislative bills in other states.

There have been many attempts to pass a PAS law in California. In spite of high levels of public support for such a bill, -- on the order of 70% -- none were signed into law until late 2015.
