Dr. Hooker conducted research in the 1950's into the nature of
homosexuality. She demonstrated that it was not a mental illness in her
1957 report The Adjustment of the Male Overt Homosexual. The
report showed that "homosexuals were not inherently abnormal and that
there was no difference between the pathologies of homosexual and heterosexual
men." She headed the National Institute of Mental Health's Task Force on
