ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH URGES ACCEPTANCE OF GAYS AND LESBIANS

Jean-Louis Brugues, a member of the Roman Catholic church's International Theological Commission has written a series of 14 articles in L'Osservatore Romano which deals with homosexuality and Christianity. Points raised in the articles included:
bullet recommendation that Catholics accept "people in their diversity"
bullet gays and lesbians can achieve sanctity in the church if they remain celibate
bullet gays should have a full and complete role in the church
bullet homosexual feelings are not wrong
bullet homosexual acts are sinful; only heterosexual monogamous marriage is allowed
bullet "Christian communities should be careful to refrain from every expression of contempt towards persons who have this particularity."
Arci Gay, Italy's largest gay and lesbian rights group praised the author for emphasizing equal rights for homosexuals in the church, but blasted the church for its insistence that gays and lesbians remain celibate.
