PRESIDENT CLINTON SELECTS GAY NOMINEES

President Clinton has made a number of interesting nominations in 1997-SEP and OCT:
 | He nominated James Hormel, 64, as ambassador to Luxembourg. Hormel is an openly gay
man, an heir to the Hormel Meat Company fortune. He is an attorney who taught at the
University of Chicago. He probably faces a difficult confirmation battle with the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee. Sen. Jesse Helms (R, NC) is its chairperson. His opposition to
equal rights for gays and lesbians is legendary.
There are reports that Hormel had been considered as ambassador to Fiji. However, Fiji
protested the idea; in that island, homosexual behavior is still criminalized.
|
 | In late 1997-SEP, the President appointed Virginia Apuzzo as assistant secretary for
policy, management and budget. She has become the highest-ranking openly lesbian person
in the Federal government. [There are two Federal employees at a higher rank who are believed
to be closet lesbians] |
 | He nominated M. John Berry, an openly gay man, as an assistant secretary for the Interior
Department. |
