man, an heir to the Hormel Meat Company fortune. He is an attorney who taught at the
University of Chicago. He probably faces a difficult confirmation battle with the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee. Sen. Jesse Helms (R, NC) is its chairperson. His opposition to
equal rights for gays and lesbians is legendary.
There are reports that Hormel had been considered as ambassador to Fiji. However, Fiji protested the idea; in that island, homosexual behavior is still criminalized. |
