DANISH CHURCH APPROVES OF GAY
MARRIAGES

Sponsored link.

In 1989, Denmark became the first country to legalize civil partnerships for gay and lesbian couples. Such partnerships carry
some of the same responsibilities and privileges of marriage. But the state church has been deeply divided over whether to
allow couples to be married within the church.
By an unanimous vote on 1997-OCT-27, the Bishops of the State Lutheran Church approved of homosexual marriages
within their congregations. Gay and lesbian couples throughout Denmark can now have their marriages sealed as part of the
regular church service.
