 | 2005-AUG-17: One of the APAs call for reduction of violence in video
games: Citing extensive research into the effect of violent themes in
video games, the American Psychiatric Association recommended that all forms
of violence in video games and other interactive media marketed to children
and youth be reduced. They note that research indicates that: "...exposure
to violence in video games increases aggressive thoughts, aggressive
behavior, and angry feelings among youth. In addition, this exposure reduces
helpful behavior and increases physiological arousal in children and
adolescents." 1,2 |
 | 2005-AUG-19: Most Jews evacuated from the Gaza Strip: The Israeli
defense forces largely completed the removal of Jews from Jewish settlements
in the Gaza Strip. Some non-settlers had infiltrated a few of the Jewish
settlements in the area and used violent means to slow down the evacuation.
Their plan backfired as many settlers were outraged at the violence. With
few exceptions, all of the buildings of the settlements will be completely
destroyed so that the Palestinians cannot make future use of them. This
action is considered an appropriate action by some and as a profoundly
immoral action by others. However, the media appears to be discussing the
destruction as simply a natural part of the evacuation. The departure of the
settlers does not give control over Gaza to the Palestinians. The Israelis
still control all land, sea and air access points to the area.
Shortly thereafter, hurricane Katrina caused
major flooding and devastation to New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana.
Many religious conservatives expressed the belief that God was angry at the
U.S. for supporting the evacuation of Jews from Gaza and sent a hurricane in
retaliation. |
 | 2005-AUG-27: TN: Westboro Baptist Church protests at GI funerals:
Members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas conducted a protest
in Smyrna, TN, during the funerals of two Tennessee soldiers killed in Iraq.
Protestors carried signs and shouted messages like "God hates fags"
and "God hates you." The Rev. Fred Phelps, the church leader and
founder, explained that God is engaging in vengeance on the U.S. by having
its soldiers killed in Iraq because the U.S. harbors gays. Town resident
Danny Cotton, 56, said: "If they were protesting the government, I might
even join them. But for them to come during the worst time for this family -
it's just wrong." Meanwhile, other residents yelled at the demonstrators
to "get out of our town" and "get out of our country."
