 | 2004-DEC-03: "Vigil for Peace" conducted in Tempe AZ:
Straight Gate Ministries is concerned about what they call a: "NEO-CRUSADE, an unholy war against the
entire Muslim world under the name of 'War on Terrorism'." They feel that
it is finding support in conservative Protestant churches. They sponsored a peaceful demonstration at the
Calvary Tri-City Church in
Tempe. They talked to and gave peace literature to about 75 members of the
congregation. The Straight Gate Ministries comments: "We have all learned there is no way to speak out, inside most churches. The pastor and deacon board maintain practiced control, and dissent is usually treated as apostasy. This was not so with the early Followers of Christ, where there was apostasy but there was also dialogue."
The pastor of Calvary church received two demonstrators and exchanged
literature. He also sent out coffee and donuts. |
 | 2004-DEC-12: Mormon author disfellowshipped: A longtime Mormon
educator, Grant Palmer, 64, wrote a book "An Insider's View of Mormon
Origins." It questions the historical accuracy of church history.
After a church trial, he was disfellowshipped from The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is a fourth-generation Mormon; he says
that he still loves the church and its basic message. He remains a church
member, but loses his ability to go into the temple or serve a church calling.
In his book, he concluded that Joseph Smith actually wrote the Book of Mormon,
incorporating passages from the King James version of the Bible, information
from the Masonic Order, etc. Similar conclusions have been reached by academic
researchers, and by computer specialists who have compared the text of the
Book of Mormon with writings known to be by Joseph Smith. Church teaching is
that Smith translated the Book of Mormon from a message inscribed on golden
plates left by ancient authors. But this book may have been considered highly
damaging by the Mormon church because of Palmer's high-profile role in the
church and because the book was created for a general readership. Since 1993,
a total of seven authors have been tried for writing unorthodox opinions about
Mormon history, feminism and theology. Five were excommunicated; two were
disfellowshipped. 12 |
