2016-JUN: The mass shooting at the
Pulse LGBT nightclub in Orlando, FL

horizontal rule

What happened?

A lone gunman. Omar Mateen, entered The Pulse Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender/Transsexual (LGBT) nightclub in downtown Orlando, FL just after 2 AM local time on Sunday 2016-JUN-12. He was carrying an assault rifle, a hand gun and a still unidentified device. He shot 103 patrons, killing 49 and injuring 54. He was himself killed by police at about 5 AM.

This caused the greatest loss of life of any recent mass shooting in the U.S. Mateen's precise motivation(s) remained unclear two weeks later

Why did he commit the atrocity?

There are a few options:

  • Many religious, social, and political conservatives believe that this was an anti-U.S. terrorist attack involving a self-radicalized Muslim terrorist with self-proclaimed allegiance to the Middle Eastern terrorist group ISIS and other radical groups.
  • Many religious, social, and political liberals believe that this was an anti-LGBT terrorist attack motivated by homophobia -- hatred of homosexuals, bisexuals, transgender persons and transsexuals. They argue that he was driven by a hatred of his own same-sex sexual attraction.

  • On the other hand, he may have chosen the Pulse LGBT nightclub simply because it was a relatively soft target with many potential victims.
