Actually, Pagans are not the root "reason for the season." Christmas is arguably brought to you by the number 23.45:
Just joking. But the tilt of the Earth's axis happens to be 23.45º. This causes the seasons and the continual change in the length of daylight hours. About DEC-21, daylight hours reach a minimum. By about DEC-25, ancient Pagans were able to notice that the days were becoming longer, with the promise of warmer months to come. So they had wild celebrations. The Roman Empire celebrated -- and how they celebrated -- Saturnalia. The Christian Church adopted the Pagan holiday, cleaned it up, and celbrated it as Christ's Mass, later shortened to Christmas.
