 | 2002-MAY-20: Turkey: New freedoms granted to Muslim women: The
High Religious Affairs Board has ruled that there should be no
discrimination between sexes. Women and men are "equal and
complementary beings." However, their decision is not binding on
the public. Believers are free to follow it or not. Until now, women were
considered "unclean" during their menstrual period. They were not
free to enter mosques and read from the Koran, Islam's holy book, at that
time. With the ruling, they are no longer forbidden to attend funerals and
pray alongside men. 11 |
