2003-FEB-27: Rowan Williams becomes Archbishop of
Canterbury: Rowan Williams was became 104th archbishop of Canterbury in
2002-DEC when his election to the post was confirmed in a ceremony at St.
Paul's Cathedral. He became the spiritual head of the worldwide Anglican
Communion, including the Episcopal Church in the U.S. and the Anglican
Church in Canada. He was enthroned on FEB-27 at Canterbury Cathedral. His
appointment has received strong opposition because:
 |
He is opposed to sexism in the church; he favors allowing
competent female priests to become bishops.
|
 |
He is opposed to war, and has protested the proposed
war against Iraq.
|
 |
He is opposed to homophobia in the church; he favors equal
rights for persons with a homosexual orientation.
|
Outside the cathedral, Rev. Tim Chapman was one of seven
clergy who protested the enthronement. Referring to Williams' liberal views,
he said: "The appointment of Rowan Williams marks a sad day because it
means that the Church of England now has as its most visible person someone
who holds wrong views about the Bible." 10
