2004-APR-7: UT: Delegation of Illinois officials
apologize for 1844 murder: The Illinois
legislature passed a resolution expressing regret for the violence
perpetrated in the mid 19th century against members of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in the state. LDS church leader,
James E. Faust, said that this "message of respect and
reconciliation...[will] long live in the hearts of this people."
Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn led a group of Illinois state officials to Salt Lake City
to apologize for the murder of Joseph Smith and the expulsion of Mormons
from Illinois. After meeting with church and
government leaders, Quinn said: "There was a chapter in our history that
we are not proud of." Mormons had built Nauvoo, IL into a city of
20,000. It was one of the largest cities in the U.S. at the time, located
about 210 miles southwest of Chicago. In 1844, LDS founder Joseph Smith and
his brother were arrested. A mob broke into the jail and assassinated both.
The church split after Smith's death. Brigham Young led most of the
membership west to Iowa and eventually to Utah. The rest formed the
Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which has since
been renamed The Community of Christ.
