About the three Abrahamic religions:
The Abrahamic
religions, listed in chronological order, are Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam. All
three revere
Abraham as one of their ancient patriarchs. Their holy books describe him as the first
monotheist.
Christianity is professed by about 33% of the world’s
population, Islam by about 21%, and Judaism about 0.2%. All of these religions are global in scope, and engage readily with world’s political
structures.
Taken together, they inspire most of the humans on earth to perform acts of
great generosity, kindness and love. Unfortunately, small extremist faith groups exist within each
of the Abrahamic
religions -- and in other religions as well. They motivate some of their followers to commit
acts of extreme brutality, violence and terrorism.
The Abrahamic and other major religions of the world may be roughly divided
into liberal, mainline, conservative and fundamentalist wings. In all cases that
we have studied, the extremist faith groups
are found as a small minority within the fundamentalist wings of religions.
