School shooting in suburban Denver, CO:
2019-MAY-07: School shooting:
One 18-year-old male student was killed and eight students, aged 15 to 18, were wounded at a suburban Denver school. It happened less than a month after the 20th anniversity of the Columbine mass shooting in a nearby high school during 1999 during which two teens killed 13 people.
District Attorney George Brauchler said at a news conference:
"This is not who we are. These are aberrant acts. My kids are going to go to school today. I recommend everyone else send their kids, too."
It happened shortly before 2 PM local time at the STEM School Highlands Ranch — a charter school that has over 1,800 students in kindergarten to 12th grade. 1
Two suspects are in custody. One is Devon Erikson, 18; the other is an unidentified juvinile female.
Two pistols were used in the shooting.
As of the morning of MAY-08, five of the eight wounded students have been releasted from hospitals. The other three are in intensive care.
John McDonald, head of security for the Jefferson County Public School District, said:
"The fact that there are two suspects, we’ve got to start wondering: What were they studying? Where did this idea come from? This just devastates the whole community. Again. It traumatizes a whole new generation of students. People are exhausted. They are tired of this. They are getting mad. Every emotion you can imagine is being felt, and over the course of the coming days, it will be magnified."
A crisis support center will be opened for students, parents and staff.
